The calendar year 2013-14 marks the 8th season at Bayard Rustin High School of the Boy’s Basketball program for Coach Keith Cochran. With over 20 years of previous coaching experience and sports mentorship, Coach Cochran wanted more involvement in his community. As a result of working with young people and wanting to expand his vision, Bayard Rustin High School was set squarely in his sight. Not only did Coach Cochran bring his expertise in sports mentorship when he was appointed Head Varsity Basketball Coach, he also brings his determination and commitment to creating a strong academic component that would sustain those under his tutelage later in life. Coach Cochran’s vision is to create a “winning” atmosphere both on and off of the basketball courts that is recognized by college coaches in that it will produce strong scholar athletes for their college teams.
Coach Cochran began his high school career as a junior reserve, but worked his way to become one of the top high school athletes in the area and nominated for the Cleveland “All Plain Dealer Dream Team” during his senior campaign. After attending junior college in San Diego, California, he was recruited by some of the top colleges in the country, UCLA, USC, Marquette just to name a few and was nominated for All American honorable mention during his freshman year. Due to an unexpected injury, during his sophomore season Coach Cochran soon realized the value of his education.
Coach Cochran’s coaching career started in 1997 at Cleveland State University, Cleveland, OH. He worked diligently as manager of the Men’s Basketball team, preparing statistical reports, supervising as well as implementing, conditioning workouts and team activities. Cochran worked one-on-one with players to strengthen and develop specific basketball skills, mentoring players to ensure their personal academic success. During 1999 through 2000, Cochran was Head Coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers Summer Pro-Am League. He coached professional and college basketball players participating in an 8 week summer league held at Cleveland State University. From 2002-2004, Cochran served as Assistant Coach Varsity at Norristown High School in Norristown, PA. He worked primarily with post players, conducted drills and scouted opponents. Cochran also served as Assistant Coach for Fencor AAU Girls Basketball Program in Germantown, Pa., Pure - Game Summer League Head Coach for West Chester University Men’s Basketball Team in Aston, Pa. In addition, Cochran served as Assistant Coach for Cheyney University Girls Basketball Team from 2004 to 2006.
Cochran holds a Bachelor’s Degree in the field of Communications from Cleveland State University. However, his success is not just limited to his coaching and work within the community, Coach Cochran is also the co-founder and COO of “Just –A- Chance @thletics”, which is a sports marketing and scouting service. This groundbreaking entrepreneurial effort focuses on locating and cultivating scholarships for high school athletes and agents for professional athletes who are underrepresented by conventional recruiters. There is never an “off season “ for Coach Cochran who has been and continues to be an integral driving force in assisting players as they succeed at the next level of competition. In addition to Coach Cochran’s business acumen, he has well established relationships with college coaches from all over the country and continues to mentor numerous high school, college, and current professional athletes.
Coach Cochran is a native of Cleveland, Ohio, and currently resides in Coatesville, PA with his lovely wife Dr. Tammy James, daughter Kayla Rose, and son Keith Harrison Cochran.
